Are you avoiding a hospital visit ?

Updated: Sep 1, 2020

Why delaying care is not recommended.

At beginning of this pandemic many people were unsure of their safety because of the mandatory shutdowns. Now the medical community is better informed on how to keep you safe and they are encouraging the public not to delay their care.

Did you know that 1 out of 4 people over the age of 65 fall each year and only 1/2 tell their doctor? (CDC; Important facts of falling)

Now that we are spending more time at home, the risk for falls actually increases because the majority of falls happen at home (for those over the age of 65 years).

What can you do ?

If you recently had a fall, and experience any pain, let your doctor know right away. Especially if you hit your head. Something more serious could be happening and it will be important that you do not ignore minor symptoms even if you "feel fine" let your doctor know to screen for possible issues.

Going to the hospital can also be an overwhelming experience, and you may be avoiding it because of past experiences, maybe for example your medication was not given to you at the right time. Well you are not alone, 3 out of 4 individuals with Parkinson's that go to the hospital do not receive their medications on time which increases their chances of having complications due to not receiving their medications.

The Parkinson's Foundation has found a way to limit that risk.

Did you know that you can get a free kit from the Parkinson's Foundation ? It is called the Aware in Care Kit and it provides you with tools and information that will help you and your family plan for your next hospital visit. This kit is something you can grab quickly (or direct someone else to). If you are unable to provide information easily to the hospital staff. This kit will help staff avoid any medications errors. Click the link below to find out more information and to get your own Aware in Care Kit.
